About The Department

The Department of Physics, established in 1896, has evolved into a prominent academic center, offering a comprehensive range of courses in both core and applied physics. The department provides programs at the Bachelor's (B.Sc. Physics) and Master's (M.Sc. Physics) levels, with an intake capacity of 64 students for the undergraduate program and 16 students for the postgraduate program, which was introduced in 2023.

The department's academic structure for undergraduate courses follows the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS), ensuring a flexible and comprehensive learning experience. The postgraduate courses adhere to guidelines similar to those set by Berhampur University. Postgraduate students are offered specialization opportunities in various fields, including Condensed Matter Physics (theoretical and experimental), Atomic & Molecular Physics, Ultra-cold Atoms, Computational Physics, Material Science, Plasma Physics, Nuclear Physics, and High Energy Physics.

In addition to regular classroom teaching, the department actively organizes seminars and webinars to deepen students' understanding of various physics-related topics. These events play a crucial role in enhancing students' skills and expanding their knowledge. The department also encourages participation in extracurricular activities such as the wall magazine and 'Science Shots,' the latter of which is provided weekly by faculty members and offers insights and updates on cutting-edge scientific research.

Furthermore, the department offers guidance to undergraduate students for competitive exams such as IIT-JAM, CPET, and CUET, and to postgraduate students for CSIR-NET, GATE, and JEST.

The Department of Physics will soon be well-equipped with a state-of-the-art computer laboratory and postgraduate practical labs, providing students with essential practical experience.

With its rich history and unwavering commitment to academic excellence, the Department of Physics continues to be a vital part of the institution, preparing students for advanced studies and successful careers in the field of physics.
